A rare night off from trapping here in Plymouth tonight, but I still managed to get a lifer as I put out hedgehog food. A Slender Burnished Brass was in its lure trap. Devon's 9th, and the first since 1999. The last one in my 10km was the 1st record in 1943!

A photo I took of the publishing industry making it repeatedly clear to me that I don’t stand a chance because the books I write are too weird/I’m not well-educated/not from a posh southern family/haven’t got famous media friends, and me saying fuck it and going ahead and writing those books anyway.
Every time I see it, I am awestruck by this tree, which has broken effortlessly through an old stone wall beside Devon’s River Teign. But - despite the simile I’ve used in my main caption - the more I think about it, the reason for the awe is not just about the tree, but about the fact that the wall, too, is still beautifully intact, after all this time. Actually, the tree and wall seem like friends, and it seems to confirm that, while nature is beautiful, what can be even more beautiful is nature working in tandem with the creations of humans (when those humans are not being grasping capitalist fuckpigs).

This clip of today's #Brambling at Devon's, Hope's Nose, has the bird give the distinctive nasal 'wheeze' call. A sound often associated with coastal flyovers. It was this that alerted me to its presence on the headland's extremity this morning. #DevonBirds #UKBirding #BirdMigration
