#Dev-Career
i have been reflecting on my career and what i have accomplished in game dev and i still don’t think it clicked for me we shipped a game over three years ago. something i never ever imagined for myself growing up and we fucking did it!!!

I think this is the best dev swag I’ve ever received so far in my career (along with my R6 Siege HyperX branded headphones) 💖

Where I ultimately land with the thoughts around game dev career mortality (wait that sounds too morbid), end game (better?) is that I want to make stuff with folks that like to make stuff and feel joy in the process. And maybe help others as they start their journey.

I didn’t know this, I will be seeking this out later. I loved forged in fire. Was going to give up my career as a software dev and become a blacksmith I watched it that much 😂

I was doing poorly as a grad student in terms of career prospects, but as I progressed I learned enough coding & sysadmin skills to migrate to a career as a dev.

I had a choice between going to uni to study psychology or video game dev. Video game dev won out just slightly cause my parents were convinced a game dev career would pay better…

Oh we were so naive!

My worry that I'm a worthless waste of time terrible game Dev is poking me again this morning, but I did sorta remember yesterday that a big section of my career where I was deeply haunted by that idea was when I was dealing with paralysing grief so idk maybes that makes it easier to ignore

not my career yet, but will be!

i've always been into coding and web dev, but had a really hard time landing a job without a degree to back it up. since i know a lot of people with comp sci degrees who also can't find a job, i moved my degree to the adjacent sphere of cybersecurity instead 😌

Grew up broke and creative, thought 3D art would be a flexible career path, picked a college focused on game dev, graduated in 2020, got a couple gigs that helped me to narrow down to tech artist, industry imploded.

So now I'm doing IHS work which will definitely remain stable by the end of 2026.

I did my third professional Masters degree and became a software dev because I get bored. previously was a children’s librarian at a public library, then a data analyst, now building websites

kind of wish I knew this was a career back when I was building mini sites for my OCs in 2002

Okay so as someone who revisited RPG Maker after years of having a professional career as a JS dev... the way it's structured is pretty wacky fun. You can do horrible, horrible things with it if you put your mind to it.

not currently in a career path because game dev is a cesspit but it used to be "I like video game. I like make video game."

now after I get my new degree it'll be "I like rock. I like space. I like rock in space."

Wanted to make Nintendo games when I was a kid. Learned BASIC in middle school from a magazine so I could make games. Realized more general dev was a more likely career path; couldn't imagine doing anything else because it just clicked for me.

"what the lore behind you choosing your career path" I graduated in the worst employment year since the Great Depression and took a shitty junior dev job that I got off vague neoptism & the two semesters of CS my math degree required. Now it's the only path that pays my student loans. Great "choice"

And you know I'm fully out of the dev part of my career when Office acting up is fully ruining my day.

Tech mythos inspired by my software dev career: “A failing auth service is offered a bandaid, thus restoring zero-downtime deployments.” Prod issue… but art.

How I started making indie games:

- Wanted to become a game dev as a teen
- Always overscoped
- Had an existential crisis and studied humanities
- Two career changes later, came full circle and work as a programmer
- Game dev has been my most persistent hobby since

Got this 27 years ago!?

Half-Life 1 started my game dev career.

The Half-Life team let me come in for play tests, sent me beta discs (which I have released to public recently) and then sent me a signed copy of the game.

What a special time to be a fan.

At some point in my game dev career, I think I wanna work on an ero game.

Like hell yeah I wanna design smutty characters in a game. I think I wanna gamify those games more too. You wanna see a labia? You better engage with the gameplay loop and hit this fuckin combo IDIOT

Kareem I felt my blood pressure go up reading this!! In my whole career I still don't have a good solution to this, other than finding a rhythm with the dev team where they understand your temp process. Because I work on a smaller team now with less turnover, it's easier to all be on the same page

After posting this, I realize I don't even know what career path you're after. I assumed it was game dev because your post was in a game dev feed. Some career paths are more competitive than others, but you can apply your degree to other paths most likely.

@burgerbecky.bsky.social has sadly passed away. She was a luminary of the game dev industry who influenced and inspired so many. We would have loved to hear her talk about her career and work.

Proceeds of her GoFundMe will now go towards covering funeral costs: gofund.me/f331da613

One highlight of my career, after sending her the 3DO Doom video, Rebecca Heineman leaked our video early!

And it was an honor to have a Doom port dev leak a nearly finished video even though I had to reach out and say “thank you so much but, uh… not yet?”
