What a wondrous creature! Earlier in my career, I worked as a translator/copyeditor for the Spanish Institute of Oceanography, so had the privilege of collaborating with their scientists. There is still so much we don't know about the undersea environment & I'm always thrilled to see news like this.

Thank you! I had a very good instructor and my years as a copyeditor have helped a lot.

And while I'm all for indexers being civil to one another, when someone comes in trying to sell something, especially something made w/ generative AI, that is different from a colleague asking a question.

But at least the spelling and grammar will be correct,
unlike if she'd written it herself and not bothered to consult a copyeditor, much less a story editor!

No, you do not need to use the generative AI features to use grammarly. Grammarly fixes grammar mistakes and frankly is also a poor substitute for a copyeditor as it runs into the same problem chatgpt and other LLMs do: it was trained on a specific voice and will correct things incorrectly.

Development Editor for a publishing company. Specifically textbooks, but have experience as a content and copyeditor as well as proofreader.

Okay thanks! So I think what happened here is the copyeditor reformatted the links and thus turned them into deadlinks. Whoops on my end!!! I’m primed to assume the worst since so many universities literally took down their diversity websites 🥴

Also draft and draught, which a copyeditor rescued for me today thank goodness

How many discovered made-up/hallucinated references would it take before a human copyeditor would be fired? (My guess, for most employers/clients, would be only one.)
November 7, 2025 at 6:27 PM
Strange week:
1) Hired to vet content and 10% of refs turn out to be hallucinated.
2) Perusing copyeditor jobs for potential clients, and 100% are seeking a copyeditor to train their AI.
Same job at base; different endpoint.

I'm not America's copyeditor(TM), but I'd say definitely "train in" unless they are using the nuts and bolts of something as training material, in which case you'd go for "train on."

Oh, that looks like so much fun! I've never gone to a book event or an in-person writer's event. I'm a bit afraid I wouldn't be welcome because I'm a copyeditor/proofreader rather than an author. I'd have to find one that's in my part of New Jersey.

As copyeditor, compound words and hyphenated words are my enemies. I always have to look them up.

Thank you MW, but also why?! 😭

copyeditor milestone: for the first time i've encountered a manuscript that correctly uses "lie low" instead of "lay low." incredible!!
November 6, 2025 at 5:38 PM
there should be a substack tier where you pay so much that they let you be the copyeditor for the newsletter
November 6, 2025 at 2:24 PM
Nah, that wasn't ignorance of his name. That was straight up my inability to spell.

That's why I ain't a copyeditor.

My journalism bad habit is responding to detailed, insightful copyeditor comments with something like "perf, sounds good ti me."
November 5, 2025 at 9:33 PM
"As a longtime copyeditor" yeah, me too. :)

I'm actually trying to find a way to talk about the problem of, let's call it for now, "insufficiently labeled" video.

And, try to encourage minimum standards. (On the internet, Eileen? Surely, you are nutz?)

It's on my mind everyday. So much misinfo!
November 5, 2025 at 6:42 PM
I get that. As a longtime copyeditor and fact-checker, when I can I try ask for location or other ID that gives clear context.
