What about a careworker doing night shifts, alternating with her husband who's working some days from home, to share childcare. When are they supposed to fit in 'voluntary work'? Never mind the £1000s they're paying in fees as part of the visa process!

Her mental health was very badly affected by separation from her husband throughout that time and he was desperately worried about her. He couldn't get a visit visa to come to the UK. And she was working a full day as a careworker and then working a second job in the evening, again care work.

Optimist: The cup is half full.
Pessimist: The cup is half empty.
Careworker: Very interesting. Anyway, I'll put 100mls on your fluid chart. Another 300mls to get to your target for the day, mind.

Thucydides: The cup of the Athenians being half full aroused fear in the Lacedaimonians that their cup was half empty, and compelled them to war.

If you take away a wheelchair user's electric wheelchair money, you now have someone who needs a careworker *and* a wheelchair.
Screaming at them "f**k you, lazy cr*p. Get your arse in to work and pay for it all yourself you worthless piece of sh*t" isn't going to change this.

& you can switch into SW as a careworker, if have worked for sponsor for last 3 months, until 22 July 2028. There is no sunset for extensions of people who already have SW leave in the two relevant SOC codes. And no restriction on settlement.

I wish your mum well. FWIW, and as I set out in careworker essay, it's not all about the pay, though that obv helps retention. A lot of it is about the aptitude for care. renewal.org.uk/2021/04/30/c...

The ‘doom loop’ started with the introduction of the national living wage in 2016. It raised careworker pay (hurrah) but meant providers had to negotiate higher fees from councils who, under financial pressure, provided long term care to fewer people. Let’s start with pay…

Also, to the current right wing complaint about legal immigration, a) what caused it to rise? Tory’s.
B) labour is helping get careworker wages and conditions improved, so helping those Brits open to that work get a decent deal; but it still won’t be enough to wipe your grandparents diarrhoea up

"Careworker is not just a job where we struggle to fill vacancies, it is a job that requires you to accept an arrangement not dissimilar to construction workers in Dubai, we need to make this more appealing to British people."

The Labour government risks making UK citizenship harder to attain than the US or Australia. Lengthening settlement time and dropping careworker visas could deter skilled migrants and harm economic vibrancy.

So, where are the government going to get all the careworkers? Are they going to force the unemployed, regardless of health, to do all these careworker jobs on pain of complete loss of benefits...?

Lots to like about this new ad campaign from DHSC and some familiar faces too. But like the last one, it’s a bit ‘28 days later’. Where has the rest of the world gone and why do we only see people who draw on support with their paid PA/careworker? vimeo.com/1051211714

The care sector is collapsing due to being underresourced, underpaid, understaffed and generally treated as an afterthought. How do we solve this?
Pander to tight wing talking points that don't actually connect to reality and make it harder to become/live as a careworker.
Great job Labour.
