Late to the #blackflyday with an unknown caddisfly

I hear it's #BlackFlyDay, so enjoy an adult Hairy Maggot Blow Fly, Chrysomya rufifacies, from our home in Leavenworth, Kansas, USA, September 30, 2022. I love the brilliant metallic colors of some of the blow flies.

In honor of #BlackFlyDay and my Dad, a dipterologist, I present to you the black onion fly (Tritoxa flexa), seen in my garden. Those wings! I love the scientific name too, like a play on 'toxic flexibility' :). #iNaturalist #entomology #backyarddiversity

Here's the coolest fly I've seen, Rainieria Antennaepes (according to inat). It's a stilt legged fly that holds its front 2 legs forward to look like antenna, to mimic wasps. It totally fooled me until I took a closer look. #BlackFlyDay #Photography #Nature #Invertebrates

For #blackflyday here’s a particularly dark, Ornithomya chloropus. Hippoboscids vary a lot in colour, but in the UK O. chloropus is usually much darker than the other species & has dark markings underneath on the thorax and head (on the mesothoracic basisternum & lateral gena to be precise).
