The author has moved on to b. Avodah Zara 4b, in which the rabbis discuss why God might be snippy at the start of the day, as all the gentiles are waking up and committing idolatry with the sun.

I love rabbinics.

It's very windy out, but we are so damn cozy. #Coworkers

The pros of indexing a highly technical but repetitive manuscript: being able to mass batch entries across whole chapters or even the whole manuscript

Cons: keeping track of which intersecting and overlapping categories I have and haven’t done

This is easily the most technical work I’ve indexed

I’m enjoying it, though!

Recalling what a deeply human process it is to create a truly useful book index — not replicable by any automated or AI system, as it requires a theory of mind, a deep understanding of the audience & their likely needs, preferred search-terms, and points of confusion.

In the midst of this dystopian clusterf*** I find it amusing that history books will have a "Portland frog" entry in the index.

Ah, the joy of having to register online as a vendor with a university financial system

In Spanish

But I did it!

I’m going to try to get as much work done on my new project as I can ahead of time

I’m on a short schedule so I’m going to have to pace myself

I've finally put my practice index for Humblewood up on my website. The book does have an official index but it's only one page long. I wanted to expand on it a bit to make the book easier to navigate for players.

Contact forms are frustrating when you’re not asking a standard question

Plus they’re so ungraceful

Sending out query emails today. Even though I know it’s a really low-stakes ask for the publisher (I’m simply asking to be added to a resource list of freelance indexers if there is one) it’s still giving me anxious flashbacks to the days of academic job searching

“Isn’t it just using “Find”?”

No. Let me give you the example of the three dudes with identical names, various titles, and several nicknames to disabuse you of that notion

Wow do I feel this

Honestly, a not insignificant part of why I appreciate my freelance work is that I get to learn about something new with every project

What job are you extremely unlikely to ever get that you think you would kick ass at?

Hi, I’m an indexer

You can tell because there isn’t a single media trope about my profession

I’m a (class of 2026) librarian. You can tell because I have strong opinions on genres and will NOT be twirling on any ladders like Belle.
Hi I’m a romance author. You can tell because of my pink feather boa and poofy pink feather pen that I twirl as I stare up into space before opining on biceps.

Well, I guess I’m taking @hopkinspress.bsky.social off the list of publishers I was planning to approach about being added to their indexer list

If they’re doing this to authors I doubt they’ll give indexers the opportunity to opt out their content

#AmIndexing
The problem with this especially in social sciences….

These books will often include heavy amounts of text and citations from people who did not agree to be in AI
“Authors have until the end of August to opt out of the licensing agreement. If they do not, their work will be used to help train AI models.”
