This is so well timed, seeing how AI was touted 14 years ago. Really interesting to compare 2 years before alexnet to where we are now.

it is strange to watch this again. a couple years after alexnet, but every ai-related point has seen surprising poor progress in the past decade.

but the main point is true. all of my (real) jobs have included automating my own job.

My hopes and dreams are that AlexNet never happened and LLMs don’t exist because AI is and will be used by the owners of capital to exploit labor.

In 2012, two grad students with gaming GPUs entered ImageNet and won by a landslide. AlexNet didn't just win—it obliterated the competition with half the error rate. The deep learning revolution started because gamers accidentally built the perfect AI hardware.

Classicism, as measured in years: max Before Alexnet (or min After Marr) 😉

How so? 🤔.

And how do we do Classical time keeping (?)

- 10 years BA (Before Alexnet)
- 10 years AM (After Marr)
- ... (?)

The era of Scientific Superintelligence is here. From the 2012 publication of CRISRP and AlexNet, to the 2022 release of ChatGPT-3, the next decade will reimagine the paradigm of the scientific method. Aligned Accelerated Discovery.

Deep learning is revolutionary, as it has been since AlexNet. It will likely build revolutionary intelligence.

LLMs - enabled by word vectorization - are the most magical application yet, but may well just be a deceptive sneak peek.

At the moment, we are playing with toys we don't understand.

I'm seeing more use of "traditional machine learning" instead of "AI". I love this, cuz
1. It says industry is sick of "AI" poisoning the term "AI"
2. It is a new, clear term that accurately describes legitimate ML work
3. It's funny cuz "traditional" stretches back to ~2012 with AlexNet lmao.

I’m not saying that everything that came out of that time was completely vacuous. I do think a lot of the theory writing can be easily applied toward intimate relationships with LLMs. The field was prescient in ways it may not have meant to be, as books were being written in the time of AlexNet.

I think you lost me here. I was following ML theory from LLMs to alexnet and convnets but I never "got" attention
October 13, 2025 at 7:01 PM
Certainly a big leap. Another perspective I sometimes entertain is that AlexNet used around 60 million trainable parameters and when reading conference papers nowadays, many of the main experiments are on models of around ViT-B size which has around 85 million parameters.

The required compute was typically a couple of GPUs on a single desktop machine, trained over several days; e.g., AlexNet was trained on two GTX 580 3GB GPUs for 5-6 days.
October 12, 2025 at 3:46 PM
In the 'early days' of modern deep learning (2012-2015) when ConvNets such as AlexNet or VGG came out, it was considered almost impractical to train an ImageNet classifier from scratch.

Кой да предположи че от Alexnet до тази свинщина отне само 12-13 години.

It’s also quite surprising how AlexNet and ChatGPT are 10 years apart. Also makes me think about the role of luck in all of this… I’m pretty much 10 years apart with Ilya, but if I would have done my PhD in NLP, I would’ve been become obsolete. It is really hard to compare…

In 2012, the breakthrough in deep learning came with AlexNet, a neural network that won the ImageNet competition, drastically improving image recognition and igniting the AI revolution we see today! #AIHistory #DeepLearning #AlexNet

Funny thing AI/ML started out trying to be clever but in 2012 (AlexNet) broke the mold. From then on it's been more data and more compute.

And I think we've finally hit the limits there so it's back to being clever to get progress.
