#AlexNet
This is so well timed, seeing how AI was touted 14 years ago. Really interesting to compare 2 years before alexnet to where we are now.

My hopes and dreams are that AlexNet never happened and LLMs don’t exist because AI is and will be used by the owners of capital to exploit labor.

How so? 🤔.

And how do we do Classical time keeping (?)

- 10 years BA (Before Alexnet)
- 10 years AM (After Marr)
- ... (?)

I think you lost me here. I was following ML theory from LLMs to alexnet and convnets but I never "got" attention

“Although some differentiate AI and non-AI systems by appealing to generative models versus other types of AI, we are convinced that this does not bring clarity …, and we can fall head first into misuse of terminology and fostering industry hype (see … Figure 1)”

i just realized the date on the post is like six months before alexnet. this is perfect. i am using this all the time

AlexNet was run on two GPUs (inside servers/desktops built by a superstar sysadmin) in Alex Krizhevsky bedroom!

www.nobelprize.org/prizes/physi...

Maybe one way to "tax" AI would be a total revamp of copyright laws to factor tech in. In order to be covered by copyright the work must have been made solely using technology from before, say, 2012 (the publication of the AlexNet paper). Otherwise, how is it meaningfully "yours"?

imho this has been the correct take since alexnet

You're right, tho--we don't know where this is going. But we didn't know where it was going in 2021 pre-ChatGPT, or pre-2017, pre "All You Need", or in 2007, pre-CUDA. Yet we kept going and progressing and learning and developing. Hell, AlexNet had the same "wow, what even are the limits?" takes.

Finally Turing award for Barton & Sutton. Kinda overdue, but amazing to think AlexNet was only 11 yrs ago & Bengio-Hinton-LeCun award was 2018. I would've followed that with a Turing for RL within a couple years, but then again I don't follow who has won since. Recognition well deserved.

In 2012, two grad students with gaming GPUs entered ImageNet and won by a landslide. AlexNet didn't just win—it obliterated the competition with half the error rate. The deep learning revolution started because gamers accidentally built the perfect AI hardware.

It is funny to me that by many measures (here, which layer best predicts V1) Alexnet remains a pretty decent model of the feedforward pass of the visual system. It kinda worked right off the bat. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

I am reading The AI Con (Bender & Hanna) and I assumed (since I followed along on Twitter for five years) that it would mostly read as stuff I already knew/believed, but I am finding that it does fill in some chronological details of which I was unaware, such as Hinton auctioning AlexNet to Google.

also: there's considerable overlap between AI experts and the "AGI cult"

ilya sutskever was a coauthor of alexnet and chief scientist at openai, geoffrey hinton has warned about existential risk from AI, stuart russell wrote both the canonical textbook on AI and a book on the alignment problem
