Oh, I forgot.

Me: Huh, I wonder if this term should be one word or two?

Merriam-Webster: One.

Me: Okay, then this other, similar term must also be one word, right?

Merriam-Webster: You wish.

Watch your homophones when writing, people - I may have spotted the following in my current #copyediting job, but spellcheck wouldn't!

toed > towed
first aid kid > ... kit
prayed > preyed
principal > principle (and vice versa)
breaks > brakes
straight jacket > straitjacket
mange > manage

I've seen "new lease in life," "new lease on life," and "new lease of life." Which is it? (Merriam-Webster says "on.") #copyediting

I have completed my Goodreads reading challenge of 40 books! I may make it to 48 by the end of this year. 😊

Book 40 was The Chicago Guide to Copyediting Fiction by Amy J. Schneider—a brilliant resource for any editor who copyedits fiction!

97 times out of 100, a sentence beginning "There is" or "There are" can start in a more effective way.

Seems like "déjà vu" has been completely replaced by Yogi Berra's "déjà vu all over again," which in my humorless opinion stopped being funny a while ago. Time to go back to the original. #copyediting

First time I've seen "at pace," meaning "at a quick pace," obviously modeled after the now-common tech term "at scale," meaning "at a large scale." Crazy shit. #copyediting

One of the most common AI phrases I see in blog content I edit: “X isn’t just about Y, it’s Z.”

As in: “Grocery shopping isn’t just about buying food, it’s a smart investment in your health.” (Yeah, these constructions *often* aren’t parallel constructions LOL)

#Copyediting tip: If you've already framed a list as being nonexhaustive, you don't need to end that list with a repetitive "etc."

YES: Examples of great vegetable include zucchini, squash, and pumpkin.

NOPE: Examples of great vegetables include zucchini, squash, pumpkin, and others.

You can write "around the freaking bend" or "round the freaking bend"; there's no reason on earth to write "'round the freaking bend."
I cannot tell you how much the “Thank you for your attention to this matter” thing drives me around the freaking bend.

Those two-letter all-cap state abbreviations (ME, NY, CA, FL, GA, SC, etc.) are fine for envelopes and parcels.

For all other uses, please avail yourself of the tried and true human-looking abbreviations: Me., N.Y., Cal. or Calif., Fla., Ga., S.C., also etc.
Another “great” sign seen today in Cornish, Me., by @nancydreyer.bsky.social.

amok and amuck are the same word, natch, in different spellings, but amok has become increasingly more popular, perhaps because it looks scarier and wasn't ever preceded by duck

if you're about to use an apostrophe to pluralize a word, don't
