not sure if there actually are enough dem defectors at this point
November 10, 2025 at 12:52 AM
i think that the point at which this all breaks down is that the literal minority whip was one of the defectors

Stephen Colbert Shreds ‘Democratic Defectors’ Who Ended Shutdown: ‘They Crumbled Like a Granola Bar’
Colbert torched the eight members of the Democratic caucus who crossed party lines to end the shutdown accusing them of “crumbling like a granola bar."

Where I am, for what little it is worth, is that the defectors were in fact defectors, and they blew the political opportunity. But we were not on the verge of extending the enhanced subsidies unless you can think of a way to get *House* Republicans on board.

They lined up all their defectors in safe positions or who had nothing to lose and everyone else had time to workshop their little posts about how they don't agree with this

Someone leaked this deliberately. We are getting defectors.
A recent leak from an ICE detention facility near Houston shows hundreds of detainees packed into a shared room without beds or bathrooms. The footage highlights allegations that the facility's air conditioning is kept on maximum, intentionally subjecting occupants to freezing conditions.

I think Hickenlooper, at a very minimum, and probably also Coons and Warner need to be treated as de facto defectors
November 10, 2025 at 1:53 AM
They clearly picked people who aren't up next year. They do this all the time. It's never just the defectors who are to blame, because they're all in on it together
so currently defectors are:

Kaine (2030)
Shaheen (Retiring)
Hasan (2028)
Fetterman (2028)
Durbin (Retiring)
CCM (2028)
Rosen (2030)
King (2030)

it also is a *very* bad look that one of the defectors, whether he's attempting to cover for another member of the caucus or not, is Literally The Minority Whip
November 11, 2025 at 12:29 AM
I assure you if anyone in the Democratic Senate caucus actually believed this was a good bill they would be physically restraining one of the "defectors" from voting, which would not be particularly difficult anyway

They all support it!
November 10, 2025 at 3:15 AM
We were unified on Tuesday. Yet Senate leadership couldn’t hold the caucus to their own line in the sand. They and the defectors are sowing the very divisions you speak of.
November 10, 2025 at 9:21 PM
This was agreed on as a caucus. The dems as a whole agreed to this.

This wasn’t defectors.
so currently defectors are:

Kaine (2030)
Shaheen (Retiring)
Hasan (2028)
Fetterman (2028)
Durbin (Retiring)
CCM (2028)
Rosen (2030)
King (2030)

And someone who can get defectors to fall in line
November 10, 2025 at 1:04 AM
Well either he coordinated that each of these defectors were ones who had no fear of being voted out any time soon or he’s so ineffective he can’t stop defectors. So either way it’s an indictment on how much he sucks.
November 10, 2025 at 3:32 PM
what magical lever do these people think the senate minority leader has to rein in 10 defectors
Had Schumer been replaced after the spring fiasco you wonder if the result would have been different. He is not a wartime consigliere
November 10, 2025 at 3:38 AM
Nobody is going to vote for a party that refuses to stand up for working people. The fact that defectors are allowed in the Dem caucus is why Americans’ way of life is under threat.

We are acting like our lives are at stake.
November 10, 2025 at 9:23 PM
Did you withhold unanimous consent to slow down the next cloture vote while pressure is applied to the defectors? No? Why not?
November 11, 2025 at 2:36 AM
Then why aren’t you withholding unanimous consent to slow down the next cloture vote to give the public a chance to pressure the defectors?
November 11, 2025 at 2:42 AM
I think it was B and then A. He didn't plan on voting for it, but then the defectors pressured him until he cracked. He then arranged the votes to prevent the defectors from being vulnerable in a primary.

Either way, it's bad leadership.
