The parts that work work well but there's this since of Over Design that permutates the whole series, both in things like character design and general plotting/world building.

I don't necessarily mind playing with the conventions by virtue of the fact that Blair Witch Project came out over 20 years ago and fact is I don't think it's ever been topped but I do think folks are definitely overdoing this "playing" aspect.
