Painting's subject dramatizes a sonnet by Dante, in which three medieval poets and their unrequited loves are harmoniously reconciled. Here the lovers effortlessly overcome the barriers that kept them separate. An impossible dream come to life.

Painting’s subject is taken from the Gospel of John 1.5. Evelyn’s Christlike figure is a woman wearing a golden gown & radiating light, dispelling the darkness like a living flame. A source of goodness and hope, she stands as a reminder that even in the darkest times Hope cannot be extinguished.
