George Lucas tried to buy Flash Gordon's IP to make his dream space film but it was too expensive.

So he decided to cobble together his own space world and sell it.

Nobody wanted it. Universal, Disney, & UA all passed.

Finally Fox funded it.

When negotiating his salary, Lucas left $350k on the table to keep the IP rights.

He diamond handed that IP for over 30 years (making royalty $ along the way) before selling to Disney for $4B in 2012.

That is S-tier vision & execution of one of the greatest trades in history.

The @hatchyverse.bsky.social story has some strong parallels.

@picosols.bsky.social grew up loving pokemon and as an indie game dev found that costs keep that IP inaccessible.

So he and some friend built their own IP.

And built a system to give it away

IP Is valuable to devs, but centralized IP use rules are arbitrary, cost prohibitive, limit creative use, and only provides concepts as a starting point for assets.
