When you see a headline that makes a claim that sounds absolutely bananas & cites some “study”, don’t just believe it because the headline used one science word. Look at the source. Was it even peer reviewed? Where? What are experts in the field saying about it? If it sounds ridiculous it might be.

When one species contains two or more types of individuals (morphs) that differ by color or other physical characteristics unrelated to sex, age, locality, or season. In panel 2, there are red-tailed hawk morphs (calurus subspecies): light, dark, and intermediate. Note: these fall on a spectrum. In panel 3, there are red-tailed hawk morphs that I wish existed: blue-footed, red-winged, pileated (with a woodpecker head), bioluminescent, pocket-sized, vulturine (with a bare head) and resplendent (with green quetzal feathers and a very long tail).

Meet the ‘takhi’ (Przewalksi’s horse), the last truly wild horses. The last individuals in the wild were seen in the Gobi desert in 1969. Only a coordinated captive breeding programme (from just 12 indivs) saved them from extinction.
