If they’ve been like that for days, I’d imagine so too. They typically only turn dark when they’re ready to emerge. Otherwise, they may be infected/diseased or dead sadly

I planted milkweed this year to help them. When I saw the caterpillars, I quickly got a habitat and put them on the porch and fed them leaves until they were ready… x3
