It’s quite interesting, want to get it to the table again armed with more knowledge.

It really is gorgeous. It can be a touch tricky to read in places, but that aside it sets the mood of the game so well. :)

Yes, the individual characters, the modern setting, the artwork, and the brutal moral choices the game forces on you definitely make it a game that can hit hard. And I'm glad you are enjoying the videos! :)

The times are a changing! Between all the new games coming with pre-rounded corners and now pre-printed blocks. Time to take on pre-learned games, that come with neural implant chips for rules.

Aside, I was playing This War of Mine when Russia started to siege Mariupol. I had to stop playing the game. It was impossible for me to divorce the game from reality. It was physically making me sick to play.

Focusing on the violence, for me, I do "have fun" playing wargames, but in my brain the violence has shifted to more of a "Marvel action movie" mindset. It's not that I don't have the emotional connection to the reality of the violence, but while I'm playing that is turned off.

The article linked here does a good job of breaking the question apart. There are a lot of angles (ethics, violence, scale, temporal proximity) and each comes to bear on the topic. "How can you enjoy a wargame?" is different from "How can you enjoy playing Nazi Germany in a wargame?"
