the compromises i've been talking about are the root of the problem. every single romance system ive encountered in any game besides baldurs gate 3 has basically felt like a formality that doesn't add anything, and even bg3 struggles with it pretty hard in some ways

like, one that isn't founded on the assumption that there just Should Be One, is there in order to enhance the game in some way. not an obligation, and with actual representation. a romance system without NPC sexualities is like a house without windows

and much of that is tied directly to the complete and overwhelming rhetorical and cultural dominance of far right incels over video games as an art form. that's been ongoing since before the internet and has mostly gotten worse with time, albeit in parallel to more positive forces recently

its not that the problems you're describing arent solvable, its that the hypothetical game that does solve them would die in obscurity even if it did exist, because only a tiny percentage of people would be interested in it. people do not want games to be thought provoking, deep art.../

the potential of video games does not matter to people at all, because they're too preoccupied with the idea that games are simply idle convenient pleasure or perfectly balanced esports and nothing more. they are purely pornographic to people

there's a whole world of interesting and never before tried concepts in this young art form that are almost always tossed aside in favor of making everything more "fun", "immersive", "content rich", "replayable", "addicting", "film-like", etc, ad nauseum. themes don't matter to people at all

or, to be even more specific, i think that these compromises being so all encompassing in games is because of devs (and publishers) capitulating to Gamer Discourse instead of actually analyzing the medium theyre in and trying to explore it beyond what reddit and focus groups want.../

it is fine for a game to have bad writing, there are staggeringly few games that have good writing, but i would argue that its precisely because of the compromises you're describing that there are so few games with good writing. and that's the core problem im trying to get at

i really do not think that limiting player freedom is a bad thing. literally every choice made during game development and especially writing limits player freedom

the solution is to have actual representation if you want to have a romance system in your game. it is bad writing to have characters be playersexual because that is not a thing in the game world, and there is no potential for depth to it besides meta commentary

if your characters are objects first and characters second, and they aren't doing some meta bit about that, they are bad characters, full stop

player characters having effective ownership over NPCs bodies is bad writing, it is bad. it just sucks. "player freedom" and immersion are incredibly ambiguous concepts whose meaning shifts entirely according to various factors, and that i also think are unconducive to.../
