Depictions of evolution where a phylogeny often has humans on the far right or top can give an impression of evolution being progressive of leading to ‘increased complexity’ when it does not. Top figure shows such a phylogeny which can look the same as ‘the March of progress’ depiction most commonly used to depict evolution (showing monkey to man erroneous march of evolution) - instead swiveling some nodes on a phylogeny where humans are shown closer to the center (which doesn’t change relationships) can lead to better ‘tree thinking’

What the...? From Late Cretaceous to Early Eocene (yup, freak survived the K-Pg) "stratosphere tooth" is a 5 meter aulopiform fish with an eel-like body covered in scutes and over 6000 conical teeth, 1000 of which grew outside its jaws!

retro pokemon sprites of two corals. they're based on various types of corals, such as rugosa and tabulate coral. first design is a head on a thin neck, peering outside of a tube. the tube has squared striping which resembles bricks. its head has rounded tentacles in a hair shape on its head. there are two tubes behind the main one with these tentacles sticking out, implying other heads hiding within. second is now a superficially humanoid shape, but is still a colony. its body has a more complex brick pattern. there are two large legs forming from a split of the main body. it has two sets of 'limbs' which are bundles of tentacles, akin to the hidden extra bodies in the prevo. the main, central head has a crenellated shape on top, with an extra long tentacle billowing from the top like a flag. shiny palette colors. normal colors are a muted brownish purple, while the shiny colors are shades of blue-green.

#Phreatoicopsis raffae is a strange #isopod in the suborder Phreatoicidea. These isopods mostly live in groundwater, but Phreatoicopsis is semi terrestrial. They are endemic to #Gariwerd, or the #Grampians, and unfortunately the place I saw it just burnt in a bushfire :(
