I think choosing what you’re doing is kind of the whole question.” “Easy, then,” Sleeves said with a grin. “I’d win the castle off of him.”

Lou’s face was on fire. There was no choice but to leap, and fall. A loud thud. Then, a groan. Not even the stone floor was cold enough to douse this heat. Lightning flashed. After it, the most fleeting of glimpses. The room was both smaller and bigger than it ought to have been; walls, at once taller and closer than they should be. The roar of thunder, paired with the encroaching migraine, silenced any further questioning on the matter. All Lou could do was lie there as still as possible, yet writhe nonetheless, wracked with pain. Lightning flashed again. There, in the remaining dark: a figure, huddled, low to the ground. Lou was not alone.

And then she woke up. Lou inhaled sharply, her eyes opening wide. She stayed still, waiting for her vision to adjust to the morning light and for her mind to adjust to the transition from dream to reality. She winced from the embarrassment. She thought she was finally free of those dreams. Wait. Had that actually happened? It was awfully dark, but her gut told her it was morning. Usually, light would be filtering in through the window at the top of the far wall by this point. She reflexively reached for her glasses, but there was something in the way; her fingers brushed up against dangling fabric, displacing it just enough for a sliver of light to filter into the closed canopy. She wasn’t in her bed. She was in his. Gods above and below, it had actually happened.

She had made it to the meeting, but it had put her through the wringer. She was fragile, she was spent, but she had to keep going. Frederic’s assurances of the Prince’s good intentions meant nothing, in the end, if she couldn’t confirm them herself. She had to see him. She had to hear it from him. After all that they’d been through together, surely that wasn’t too much to ask. There was no turning back; another chance like this might never present itself. All she had to do now was convince the new captain of the guard to let her in. Unfortunately, he was as steadfast as they came—she’d picked him herself. Lou looked back to Frederic. No matter where she wished to go. She took a deep breath, and then held out her hand. “Promise?” The knight took her hand and shook it firmly. “You have my word.” Lou smiled for the first time that day; the first time in many days. “Okay.”

And you stopped her.” “…I did? She didn’t get away?” “No,” the Prince said, chuckling in disbelief, “she very much did not.” “Well then why didn’t you reverse it? Why didn’t you have your… magic friends fix this?” The Prince steepled his fingers. “Loulou, you need to understand,” he said, speaking softly and methodically, “you killed that witch really hard. Even the nice witches, the ones who don’t want to steal my body, are very scared now. I don’t think any of them will ever come near us again.”

Glasses bowed in greeting, then quietly walked over to the remaining empty bed. It was a modest but comfortable affair: a frame, a mattress, and some bedsheets. Conspicuously absent, however, was the pillow. “Welcome, neighbor!” Chiffon said from her bed across from the nightstand. “Oh right! Sleeves, you should give…” She paused and looked at Glasses, spotting the little round pin that had been temporarily affixed to the small rectangular patch on her collar. “You should give her back the extra pillow.” “Aw, but it’s so comfy,” the first maid whined from the top bunk, partway through filling in half of the uniform’s freshly-cleared collar patch with a square of contrasting thread. Sleeves peeked over the side of their bed and looked down at Glasses, their mouth slowly spreading into a sly grin. “Alright, tell you what. How about we let fortune decide?” They fished out a deck of cards from under their mattress, flicking it from one hand to the other, card by card, like an accordion.

The Prince stretched his shoulders and tugged at the collar of his shirt as the maid put the last piece of armor alongside the rest. He looked over. “This isn’t keeping me safe.” She froze in place for a second. Puzzled, she began to inspect the metal plate in her hands, turning it over to get a better look. “I wasn’t talking about the armor,” the Prince said as he closed the distance between them in a single step. He lifted her chin with his left hand—eliciting a gasp of surprise—and slipped his right arm around the small of her back, pulling her in. He was no longer juggling multiple tasks at once; his full attention was on her now, and it was inescapable. There was no looking away; not from his face, his subtle smile, the burning intensity of his eyes. Her mind raced. Her pulse quickened. Blood rushed to her face.

“I guess that makes sense!” Jenny said, offering Lou a fried potato. She chewed on it, not even registering the taste as she spiraled further into her thoughts. What if their two problems required two different solutions? What if they couldn’t turn the royal decoys back? Lou knew nothing of the magic involved. Maybe it’d be impossible. Or, more likely, too risky. What if her own choices, regardless of how benign her intentions had been, had doomed these women to wear another’s face for the rest of their lives? Could they truly be okay with that? And if they weren’t, would they ever admit it? Maybe this was justice. Some great irony, the price Lou had to pay for inflicting Her Majesty’s shape on other people. Now she had to bear it herself. Maybe Lou hadn’t been the victim of a curse, or some evil scheme, or a series of terrible misunderstandings. Maybe she was just getting what she deserved.

She did. “Good luck out there,” she told the third and final woman with a sympathetic nod. Her turn had come. She stood up and walked over to the knight, looking up into his eyes with an unblinking, steely-eyed stare. “You have already received your letter,” the knight said, just as stoic. No reply. The knight sighed, the first crack in the perfect defense of his etiquette showing at last. “Why are you here, sir?”

Well then, Her Majesty must be counting her lucky stars things turned out the way they did, and not the other way around!” “Hah, can you imagine? Maybe that was the witch-person-thing’s goal all along, get rid of our strongest warrior and greatest mind with a single curse.” “Maybe. Lucky for us, we ended up with a brilliant warrior instead of an airheaded pretty face. Still, it was a very pretty face.” The socialite caught Lou’s gaze, and for a brief moment they made eye contact. “Heyy, kind of like yours!” Lou shrank in her seat, abruptly stooping over to stare into her coffee, hoping to evade the lady’s eyes—finding her own staring back at her instead, from the reflection in the liquid. Maybe she could still escape this conversation.
