The name 'Aysgarth' is from Old Norse, brought by Viking settlers to the area. It means 'open space in the oak trees'. The falls have attracted famous figures for over 200 years, including Wordsworth, J.M.W. Turner, and Ruskin.

I think it's easy to assume they're doing nothing but as the council officer I quoted anonymously put it, "We can’t spend time on more than one difficult route at once. It takes all our effort to progress it an imperial inch per year.” i.e. the system is fundamentally broken.

I FOI'd English councils whether they use legal land purchase powers to create traffic-free paths. Just 1% said they have successfully.
