This is one of the first things in @jeremykun.com's "A Programmer's Introduction to Mathematics", and one of the reasons I recommend it to people. Reading a formula gives you the general gist, writing it out yourself forces you to think about each individual term.

Fun fact, the number of possible rhythms you can make with n beats is the (2n+1)st Fibonacci number. For example with 3 beats there are 13 possible rhythms, since
F(1) = 1
F(2) = 1
F(3) = 2
F(4) = 3
F(5) = 5
F(6) = 8
F(7) = 13
