I started re-reading this, thinking about how influential Vowell’s quirky I’m Not Like Other Historians writing style turned out to be for a lot of recent nonfiction writing. This isn’t a knock against Vowell— she comes by her quirks honestly, and she’s very earnest and sincere in her research

When work began on the Boston subway in 1894, contractors knew they’d encounter bodies from Central Burying Ground along Boylston St. The excavation of so many bones became a spectacle, and over 1000 bodies were relocated to a mass grave elsewhere in the cemetery.
