Person of the books. In my Ramban era.

Holding on to Jewish delight.
No wonder Pharoh caught up with them!

"In anticipation of partaking of the first Paschal sacrifice. Moses told the Israelites that no foreskinned man might eat of the Paschal sacrifice (Exodus 12:48). ... they must have circumcised themselves before partaking of the Paschal sacrifice."

Digging in my to-read pile and... wow. Someone made a heck of a choice on who wrote the forward.

(It's Bari Weiss on a book by Rabbi Jonathan Sacks, if you can't read it.)

(I did not pay money for this book, a friend sent me a box of books when she was cleaning out her office.)

What edition/what's the title of the actual midrash? 495 in mine looks like this picture and the closest I see is that Moses lives apart from his wife for years so trying to track it down

(This is in my to-read pile, clearly)

a) שהחיינו
b) I did not think through the implications of brand-new straps rather than broken-in hand-me-down straps.

I ran out of my stash of kosher-for-passover marshmallows and started looking online. I think Target is wildly confused as to what "kosher" means. 😆

Also seriously, why not make the marshmallows vegan while you're at it and skip another allergen? Why fish gelatin?

It's not just Rashi, which makes it trickier. I haven't tracked down all the footnotes but I think a bunch of the rest of it is the Rebbe.

If I want a Rashi-inflected translation, I'm already equipped.

Am I misremembering what the theory of relativity says, because I don't think it has anything to do with heliocentrism vs Copernicanism. Sure, you can do the equations that describe the motions of the planets and stars either way (ish), but the theory of relativity has nothing to do with that.

Well, and I agree that hashem is beyond gender and would have preferred to end the sentence there.

New year, new commentary and I miss Rashi already by page XXV of the introduction by the phrase "supra-human"

Counterpoint. This book is 294 pages long.

... Well, I guess it's time to review this

Well, the AI says it's the 29th of Elul and that the 29th of Elul is Rosh Hashanah so I hope everyone's finished their preparations.

This is what it looks like for me: the top post is there and then I can scroll down.

Is it possible you've played with your settings?

As Pride month comes to an end I wanted to share a queer Jewish practice I have that I've never seen elsewhere.

First off, I'm trans. I, like many trans people, did not fit in my body. Parts of my body simply didn't map to what my brain thought my body was. This made my brain panic. /1

I thought reading something from Gershom Scholem would be interesting so I was perusing reviews for "Major Trends in Jewish Mysticism" and ... somehow reading this collection of essays *got someone to follow Sabbateanism". Apparently sometimes people who study history doom themselves to repeat it.

My class finished tractate Horayot today and the end is 🧑‍🍳😘

A dilemma was raised before the Sages: Between Rabbi Zeira and Rabba bar Rav Mattana, which of them is preferable?

This is the real answer to how you become a Jew.

(Wanting to argue about answers in the quiz, not getting a perfect score, obviously)

That was fun, @shammaiintl.bsky.social

Why the heck is it Yom Kippur in the window of this church?

(Tag yourself, I'm heading off to Azazel)

The Book of Customs also claims that Mizrachi Jews throw apples off the roof during Shavuot. Is this... a thing? Is it still a thing? I failed to find references online and haven't seen it happen.

Likewise the Israeli Hebrew accent is legitimate. The rabbi who wrote this book about brachot for food seems to have some beef.

Well that's a heck of a take (from Professor Baron quoted in Arendt's Eichmann in Jerusalem):

"Would the death of the Jews have been less of an evil if they were a people without a culture, such as the G*psies who were also exterminated?"

Because we should be a light unto the nations. Every people should be, with the light that is uniquely theirs.
