Respectfully, I disagree. Trump may have started this back in 2016 but now he's backed by an entire ultra-conservative faction. They literally published their playbook (Project 2025) and shared their plans for dismantling democracy to institute their social vision.

The wording of the original memo was so unclear that any publicly funded program - including Title I - could have been on the line. That's why there was such chaos and panic.

This was a huge overstep on Trump's part and a naked attempt to grab control. Federal grants cover virtually everything from early childhood education to social safety net programs. Cutting funding would have devastating consequences socially and economically.

A leaked OMB memo announced a presidential order to freeze federal grants. Trump doesn't authority to freeze or rescind funds approved by Congress. The National Association of Nonprofits & other groups filed a lawsuit, with a federal judge placing an injunction on the directive until Feb 3.
