I see lots of glum posts today, claiming it's pointless to commemorate the 4th or honor the cause of liberty because of our current government. STOP IT! The American experiment needs courage & commitment, not hand-wringing & doom-calling. They knew this in 1775. Remember it now. #NoKings
From the Virginia Gazette of July 1775: "Our forefathers did not think that ever a king of England would break his oath and murder his subjects in cool blood, and take their money and rob his people, without giving them any opportunity to defend themselves but by the sword. This is dreadful, and dreadfully true. May the God of our forefathers direct you so to defend your rights and property, as will teach us to depend on the justice of our cause and the hearty love of our country, in full confidence of a complete victory; this is the hearty prayer of thousands. "My house is crowded all day with inquiry - how will the colonies behave? Will they act like men? Or are they such poltroons as Lord Sandwich said they were? In his speech in the House of Lords, he said that the Americans are cowards, will not fight, are men of a mean spirit, dastardly poltroons, all noise and bully, and that a few soldiers would soon make them submit. But God forbid that my worthy friends in America should add disgrace to ruin, and make the cause of God and man of no effect. The fleet is sailed or sailing. General Gage has drawn bills on the Treasury, 24,000 pounds sterling for secret services to pay the tools of government in all the different colonies. Such bad policy must bring on ruin. Many of the hungry dependents on the King have asked for places, and you will not only have taxes to pay and a standing army set over you, but you will have all those vile cattle to maintain."

In a very few days, we will reach the anniversary of the Battle of Bunker Hill in 1775. Remember General Warren and the sacrifices of all those who fought and died, so that there would be no more kings in America. #NoKings

Today, we observe the anniversary of D-Day in Normandy. But, in 1944, certain news of D-Day didn't arrive until the dawn of June 7. In Western N. C., people like the Coffeys were glued to their radios & frantically bought newspapers. Fire alarms, sirens, & church bells rang in every town. #D-Day

Good morning, America! Today is the 250th anniversary of the battles of Lexington and Concord. Remember it well. The nation's journey toward liberty begins here. Do not let the suffering and sacrifices of all those who came before us be in vain. #NoKings
This is a painting by the artist William Barns Wollen. It was painted in 1910. It depicts the battle of Lexington, fought on the morning of April 19, 1775. The British troops were marching from Boston to Concord, with orders to seize the Concord magazine. The Lexington militia, called 'minute men,' knew the British were coming and gathered on the Lexington green in the early morning hours. The British ordered them to disperse, but the militia refused. As tensions rose, a shot was fired - called afterwards, 'the shot heard round the world.' The British claimed the militia fired the first shot; the militia accused the British of doing so. Regardless, the British commander ordered his men to open fire on the assembled militia, thus beginning the Revolutionary War in America. This painting shows the conflict on the Lexington green, with the British red coats charging across the open grass toward the militia. The militia attempt to stand their ground and return fire, but they cannot maintain their position. Already, several men have been killed and wounded, and they have no cover or reinforcements. The air is filled with smoke from the exchange of musket-fire, and the sky is grey and foggy - creating a hazy atmosphere reminiscent of a dream, or a memory.
