Deprivation isn’t only a rural or coastal issue. Some larger cities - Manchester, Birmingham & London - see high levels of deprivation too - driven by high housing costs and high levels of insecure work and low pay.

Wherever you live should not affect your chances in life -but this is not the case.

🚨New deprivation data reveals continual deep regional divides across many areas in England.

High levels of deprivation are concentrated in many ex-industrial northern and midlands towns and coastal areas, where manufacturing and tourism industries have been lost.

Good to see the first multi-year settlement for local crisis support in Spending Review, with govt's new Crisis and Resilience Fund supported by £1bn a year (replacing the Household Support Fund). Long-term funding will allow councils to target preventative support to the most vulnerable households.

A bleak picture for many ethnic minority groups in @jrf-uk.bsky.social UK Poverty report.

Asian & Black households are by far the most likely to be in poverty - with even higher poverty levels for children in these households.

No one should be more at risk of poverty because of political choices.

In the govt's AI Opportunities Action Plan, there is one mention of protecting the public from the (unspecified) risks of AI, plus a brief reference to the (unspecified) interests of marginalised groups, although do note the caveat here!

No mention of civil society...

There's a similar story regarding arrears, with Black, Asian & mixed ethnicity low-income households all much more likely to be falling behind on their bills.

66% of households with a Black respondent were in arrears in Oct 24, compared to 31% of low-income white households. This is over double. 2/

@jrf-uk.bsky.social's latest Cost of Living Tracker makes for grim reading, particularly for low-income ethnic minority households who all face an elevated risk of hardship.

Around 8 in 10 households with a Black respondent are at very high risk of going with essentials such as food and heating.🧵1/

Accidentally twinning with @ginasue.bsky.social at @jrf-uk.bsky.social’s event on AI & countervailing power in the UK, that I designed & Gina expertly hosted!

So great to convene expertise from policy, grassroots orgs, regulators, media, unions & more to discuss how we challenge Big Tech’s power.
