Don't give up. Give yourself lots of time to discover how you like to hold your hook and yarn. Crocheters can be on the rebellious side. :)

I crocheted a bunch of flat partial circles, stacked them on top of each other then sewed them together. I made the frosting by crocheting the same flat shape then added the sides, like the side of a basket. Then I fitted the frosting on top of the sewn cake pieces, like at hat, if that makes sense.
