#FreeDC - domestic arts ↔️ public message - guerilla knitters - craftivism - 'to understand how the primarily domestic activity of knitting became a preferred method of political activism, we must unspool the 🧶' --Andy Marlow

The people of DC are joyful and powerful, and we deserve the right to KNIT. (Also to crochet.) (Also to govern ourselves.)

Imagine, as a well respected architect like Shalom Baranes, having to say, I BUILT THAT.

It's the weekend, meaning we might have time to "waste" pondering what Diane Arbus' quirky lens would have alighted on in our present-day landscape...

National Guard slouching through a DC park? Tradwives leaning into a tête-à-tête? A haunted-looking teen hugging her humongous Stanley cup?

Yarnbombing’s nice, sure—you decorate a town. But what about when the yarnbomb knitting IS the town?

Multiple stitchers worked on this for 6️⃣ full years, and it is just FABULOUS.

The refusal to consider DC Statehood is largely a reluctance to give DC two Senators, which itself is a tacit admission that the United States Senate is an anti-democratic institution.
Statehood for D.C. is an ethical obligation at this point, required to protect the rights of our residents to govern ourselves against such out-of-state troops being sent to patrol our city.
NEW: Republican-led states, in a new filing at the D.C. Circuit, say D.C. residents are irrelevant, D.C. belongs to everyone else. storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

The filing is led by the South Carolina and West Virginia attorneys general. Both states sent troops to DC.

💭Looking up from my knitting to think about how much I also love libraries.
A couple weeks ago we got a lovely note from someone on the other side of the country thanking us profusely for ILLing a book to them. Curious, we looked up the book they borrowed.

It would have cost $1,200 for them to purchase it.

ILL is one of the things I love most about libraries.
Requested a book through ILL over break. It arrived today. Libraries man.

Amazing people digitized the world's largest community arts project, the AIDS Memorial Quilt! Searchable, or browse for beauty, memory, resonance. Zoom out for a pointilistic magnitude. (I chose a few squares, h/t @marisakabas.bsky.social.)

This incredible indigenous #WomensArt reminds us we must get up the street to the National Gallery of Art's unprecedented show of treasures from Down Under, "The Stars We Do Not See." (Also remind us NGA needs to get over here on Bluesky STAT.)

Well, okay -- might try this!
The last stitch usually turns out a bit loose. If you seam your knitted piece to another, that won’t be a problem. But for “free-standing” pieces there is a fix:
Knit to last stitch, lift the stitch below the last stitch onto your left needle and knit the two stitches together 🧶 #knitting

A mentor-to-be of mine (Philip Yenawine) created A Day Without Art as part of the Visual AIDS collective in 1989. A day to honor the loss of brilliance as a result of the epidemic. 1/x

This year, Trump cancelled recognition of World AIDS Day, today, & cuts to funding worldwide have consequences.

Cacerolazo protests have been done since the 19th century. Most famously in Argentina and Chile. We’re doing them in DC, and you can too. They’re simple, legal. Best of all you get to meet your neighbors. #freedcproject
