Cover of Generativität Abstract: Beyond the mere generation of a flood of content, the generativity of AI can be tied to the generation of statistical patterns based on datafication, pattern recognition, and prediction. In this process, generative AI instantiates a "model of the world"—a supposedly "domain-dependent" representation of the world, an inherently distorting lens. This article traces this three-step process—datafication, pattern recognition, and prediction—historically. It begins with Galileo's telescope as a literal lens and basis for the postulation a "hidden mathematical order" in the universe, continues through Adolphe Quetelet's social physics and the application of statistical tools to uncover such orders in the social realm, and culminates in the history of research on neural networks, which are conceptualized not as models of the mind but as models of existing social orders. Using current applications as examples, the article demonstrates how generative AI, due to its specific output logic and its reliance on a limited number of data points, preemptively narrows the potential scope for action. Generativity thus appears not only as a technical process, but as a political force that generates new norms and thresholds for the constitution of social orders.
