Psychotherapist, private practice. Psychodynamic psychology.
If I was Canada I would just start calling the US “Southern Canada” and change all my maps. Then the teacher would send everyone to the principal’s office.

What what are we doing here, folks? Like, for real. Why are you on social media. Why am I. I can say there's probably some layers of motivations for me. And some clarity. And some things that are less than clear.

Well it’s Christmas Eve. Two bills scheduled for auto-pay nevertheless go through.

Two categories of psychotherapy: “predictive” and “immersive.”

Predictive: content-focussed, examines experiences occurring outside session, predicts new experiences.

Immersive: sessions are developmental events. Psyche is expressed on a continuum in and out of sessions.

Psychotherapy is sitting in a room talking. That’s not to minimize it. But in discussing elaborate theories, it helps to think about the parts of sitting in a room talking that they might actually describe.

I’m suspicious that Psychology Today blogs disregards publication proposals entirely unless you have advanced credentials or prior publications. Like they don’t even read the proposal otherwise. Anyone confirm?

This is why I think psychotherapy is hard and takes a long time: because if we take these ideas at all seriously—that my ego and internal objects allow me to know that I exist, for example—a rearrangement means that I must tolerate an experience of falling apart.

“Tonight I am going to touch on a vast and obscure topic, and the present paper is necessarily in the nature of preliminary notes.”

Then mentions projective identification for the first time.

Really think about this for a sec. You’re a tiny infant. You haven’t developed internal symbols. All you have is raw sensory experience. And instinct. And affect. But you don’t know it’s yours. You don’t know where you end and begin. Imagine this as best you can. Let it sink in.

Hope can be the denial of loss. Avoidance of grief. And an attempt at repetition.

I hope for what was, or what might have been, at the expense of what is.

Hi I’m Alex

Introduce yourself with your worst feedback from school:

Hi, I’m Andrew, and writing like mine doesn’t get into the New Yorker.

(Which is the purpose of writing, apparently, at least according to my writing teacher. They almost got me to give up on it. Almost.)

"Reading is not simply a matter of considering, weighing, or even of trying out the ideas and experiences that are presented by the writer ... You, the reader, must allow me to occupy you, your thoughts, your mind, since I have no voice with which to speak other than yours."

- Thomas Ogden

A mind doesn’t exist in the same way that a duck does.

To know it you have to simultaneously enlist its capacities.
