Just checking 😉…that was the nationalised water sector as it was handed to private companies in 1989.

Yes!!!! They are the equivalent of an album by ‘one hit wonders’…lots of awful filler songs. I used to play in pit orchestras in my younger days and it was always purgatory

There is much that can still be improved - the system isn’t perfect by a long shot - but there has been significant investment driven improvements across many many metrics.

Interesting statement. What was it about 1980s UK water and sewerage you liked? The dumping of raw sewage sludge in the sea? Rivers through major cities which were effectively biologically dead? Higher levels of lead in drinking water? Far greater levels of supply interruptions?

The details will be complex, but these companies are valuable - and the only way to nationalise is to buy them. Examples of national companies (NI Water, Scottish Water) indicate ownership doesn’t mean better performance.

Not without a huge cost to the taxpayer - these are companies with £bn of value in assets. Government can’t afford to buy them back.

Railways are contracts that come to an end and therefore the cost to take back in is low. Water Companies are businesses with billions of £s of assets that would need to be “bought” and therefore is unaffordable to the Government

Awsome song….introducing my 7yo to it recently and struggling to comprehend that it’s over 20 years old now.

It’s like my Dad sharing early Beatles tracks with me 😳
