My last job was custodial and I effin loved it. Just vibed out for 8 hrs listening to audiobooks and making the space all nice and clean for folks to use the next day.
people always like to sneer "in communism no one will clean the toilets" and just so you know, I will. cleaning the toilets is nbd and the reason cleaning-the-toilets-type jobs suck is because they don't pay enough and take up too much of your time, not because cleaning toilets is innately degrading

I'm sorry, these are load-bearing em dashes and as such I will not be removing them.
Just saw a post where someone said that use of em dashes (—) was a giveaway that you're using AI for writing. Uh, no. It could just mean you like to use em dashes.

in this house we stand for inconvenient queers, trans people who don't give a shit about passing, angry Black women, undocumented immigrants who are tired of being polite to racists; mentally ill people on public transit; and everyone else you're too proper to stand on solidarity with.

Yesterday, I grabbed a bite-sized read by trans author Xavi Frey @xavifrey.bsky.social called Voidbloom (I give it 4.5 stars, review pending).

Yes, it's super short, but it was just what I needed before bed, a cozy, zero-angst, sci-fi mental palate cleanser.

Unsolicited writing advice, no. #766: Writing is a community. Participate in it if you can. Engage with other writers. Lift them up, and they’ll do the same. Try to go it alone, or treat other writers as rivals, and you’re more likely to sink than swim.

Fellow journos covering "AI": Please don't do their PR for them! "Virtual employees" is a harmful anthropomorphism in that it (a) is false; (b) confuses readers about the emerging technology and inaccurately lends human attributes like agency, accountability, etc.; and (c) harms humans in real jobs.

Art should be funded like science. To properly fund art, you fund failure. Funding failure will give you occasional excellence. Creating any art with the aim of it being popular enough to make money, will give you consistent mediocrity. Arists need funding to play and fail because that's the process
Let me tell you about the weird business that delivers art into our lives, and the impact it has on the long-term careers of artists. This is a thread prompted by yet another article on authors' incomes, and the inevitable reactions from the 'people-would-pay-if-it-was-worth-it-to-them' brigade. 1/

Please don’t mistake my loathing of AI art for a hatred of shitty-looking things in general. I love stuff that looks shitty. The early films of John Waters? Astonishingly shitty looking. But a real pervert made it look that shitty with his bare hands. That means something in this house.
