the levadas were built from the 16th through the 20th century. following the water (roughly) from the cloudy mountains in the northwest to the arable lowlands in the south, you get to see different habitats, long tunnels (just don't be tall), and plenty of waterfalls.

the island of madeira is criss-crossed by levadas - historic but functional water supply channels, many of which now double as hiking trails through otherwise inaccessible terrain.
