Yo dawg we heard you like packages so we packaged your encapsulated wafer inside a ceramic windowed package and packaged that inside a hermetically sealed moisture barrier (package) because what even are optical losses - apparently.

A photograph of a custom ccd image sensor chip, inside a moisture sealed ceramic windowed carrier, itself inside a third hermetically sealed can/glass to metal sealed feed through chamber, along with some small ampules of dessicant. The whole aim is to keep the atmosphere inside the package free of moisture, so that the sensor chip can be cooled to below ambient dew point level, without condensation formation (think how your freezer ice grows over time). Oh yeah, why? Because cooling the sensor reduces a lot of the shot noise that comes from CCD sensors - which means you can have a lower detection threshold/ SNR for low light imaging - like astrophotography!
