Well, yes and no. There IS an algorithm. However, you need certain feeds enabled (I.E. the Discovery feed) in order for it to actually show things to you. Anyone who doesn't have these feeds enabled essentially does not have an algorithm recommending them things.

I just hope I can find one for the other side of the political spectrum, too. Both sides are super annoying.

Ah, yea, I remember there being a block list going around for these types of accounts. I was confused by what replies you were talking about, but then I saw the hidden replies because all of the weird ones are on that block list.
