It was a very slow-healing injury, and I couldn’t have saved her without the help of an excellent veterinarian and farrier, who made the therapeutic shoes and cast her injured foot for 8 months. I drove her 900 miles every 6 weeks for new shoes & x-rays.

She is a huge, powerful, and emotional horse, which can be quite intimidating. At the same time, she is also exceptionally kind and intelligent.

Nearly one year ago, just as I was about to start her under saddle, I thought I was going to have to put her down because she broke a bone in her hoof.

Now that I have long ago abandoned the idea of making her into something to suit me, she seems to be more of a “ranch dog” than ever — my constant companion, always quietly stationed somewhere nearby happily watching my every move and just waiting for her opportunity to tag along.

Reba never measured up to the job I had in mind for her — she proved to be an avid wanderer and always had an unquenchable desire to nip at the horses’ heels rather than stay nearby or take on the mantle of trail boss.

These days, spinal stenosis and hip dysplasia has slowed her down just a little.
