The Scotland arm of the UK's largest woodland conservation charity. We create, protect & restore native woods & trees for people & wildlife, to combat climate change & build a greener future.
Currently it's much easier for landowners to benefit from lucrative carbon schemes (such as the Woodland & Peatland Carbon Codes) than it is for tenant #Crofters. The next Scot Gov should change this so that tenant crofters can benefit when they improve their land for nature. #ScotParlElection26

🍂 Any leaves left?

While you’re out this weekend, look around, are the trees bare yet? 🌳👀

Your sightings can help #NaturesCalendar track how the seasons change across the UK. 🌦️

Please take part in this e-action to urge our politicians to set binding targets to restore nature.
One in nine species in Scotland is at risk of extinction. We can change this. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
The Natural Environment Bill is our chance to set binding targets to restore nature.

Trees on farms & crofts bring many benefits from shade and shelter for livestock, to improved water management helping in times of drought and flood. And from food & fodder to increased yield plus other products like fruit or firewood. 1/2

Great film by @lesleyriddoch.bsky.social

The central reservation of a stretch of the A9 is in a more natural state than the surrounding hills. We highlighted this paradox in our report titled ‘Trees and woods: at the heart of nature recovery in Scotland’ 👉https://buff.ly/zw4BEmU
Centuries of overgrazing & muirburn for grouse moors mean Highland Scotland looks treeless & desolate. But it doesn't have to be this way. New film Scotland's Missing Forests went online y'day. Chuffed to see almost 10k views. www.youtube.com/watch?v=MuTV... @chrisgpackham.bsky.social

Gorgeous day at #Backmuir Wood with volunteers from Aviva🍂

The group did a stellar job removing young beech trees, opening up space around regenerating oak and rowan, whilst also allowing more diverse ground flora to come through🍄

Everyone should benefit from trees, no matter where they live. That's called Tree Equity.

The next Scottish Government should recognise the benefits of #TreeEquity and work with communities and local authorities to deliver trees for all, ensuring more people can enjoy better air quality...1/2

From 2014-2018 the Trust & UK landowners planted woods to mark the centenary of the First World War. Scotland's flagship site is at Dreghorn, near Edinburgh. This Remembrance Day, we thought we'd share how the wood is developing. A few years = a big difference! More Centenary Woods 👉 buff.ly/EoSA7Yi

This week's #ThickTrunkTuesday is a cracker! The Balmerino Chestnut. Fife’s oldest tree, thought to be around 450 years of age. Tis lovely to read personal memories of the tree on the Ancient Tree Inventory website 👉 buff.ly/fDd6bm5 Search the site to find ancient trees near you. #AncientTrees

We love a good collective noun and there are lots of crackers for rooks, including congregation, storytelling, building, parliament and clamour.

The bird's Latin name Corvus frugilegus means "fruit-gathering crow".

To support jobs across the nations and to protect our environment from new imported pests & diseases, we should only be planting trees that are UK & Ireland Sourced and Grown (#UKISG). The next Scot Gov should commit to meeting UKISG standards in tree procurement & work with industry to deliver.

Great to meet with #ScottishForestry Highland Conservancy team near #Ullapool this week, quite the view! The topic: establishing trees on marginal, upland areas. We talked tree species, provenance, natural regen vs planting & constraints such as exposure, soil minerals, peat & deer. Super useful.

Fantastic to visit Phil's wildlife #croft on the Isle of Skye last week 🌳
Phil is managing the woodland to maximise benefits for biodiversity, improve productivity and support enterprises such as a tree nursery, the production of wood fuel and the sale of hardy fruit trees🪵
👏 Inspiring stuff!

⚠️Hedgehogs and other hibernating creatures are at risk on #BonfireNight.🦔Please build your bonfire in an open space WELL AWAY from trees and hedges. 🔥Check before lighting to make sure there are no creatures hiding in there. 💦 Dampen ashes with water to avoid animal injuries.

It's clear our native and ancient trees need more protection. It's still too easy to chop them down or damage them - there are gaps in existing protections.

New legislation could close these gaps and protect Scotland's native trees for the future.
