Yesterday, I found a pretty cool group of apartments with a very cool playground opposite the Prince of Wales Hospital Campus in Randwick.

These buildings are great; we should build 10 billion more of them around UNSW and the Prince of Wales Hospital.

Macquarie Fields is a station on the T8 and receives the same number of trains into the city as Campbelltown.

However, the land use around the station is quite lacking with mostly single-family houses and some townhouses. How would you zone this area?

Campbelltown Mall is a large shopping centre in the Campbelltown CBD. If it was consolidated into taller buildings, the rest its floor area could be used to build a new precinct with 100s of homes, an expanded Koshigaya Park, and a new primary school. This idea and the sketch are very rough.

In Adelaide, most bus stops are named with a number that usually ascends as you travel away from the CBD and the road that the stop is on.

This system is impressively consistent, but for stops with a notable point of interest (POI) nearby, the road name should be replaced with the name of that POI.

Adelaide, Perth, Brisbane, and Melbourne all have very long bus routes that encircle the city.

Out of all of them, which is the best and which is the worst?

Westfield West Lakes covers a large land area near Adelaide’s coastline. It is a major shopping centre and bus interchange for the region with connections to the CBD.

I think this land could be used better if some of the surface car parks were turned into apartments and actual public parks.

Despite these shortcomings, I still think it is a cool place that, when fully developed with transport infrastructure completed, I would be delighted to live in.

It is also an interesting vision into what a similar nearby precinct, Camellia-Rosehill, will look like once it is developed.

As a developing area, some blocks are isolated from the rest of the precinct by undeveloped areas. This problem is present in greenfield sites too, but it looks comical with apartment buildings. These buildings are also inaccessible from the nearest bus stop despite being visible from the stop.

Transport options are a bit lacking. Sydney Metro West and Parramatta Light Rail Stage 2 haven’t been built yet, so residents here rely on buses. The 526 bus is frequent, but only stops adjacent to the precinct. The 401 bus that does run on Carter St is peak-hours only and woefully infrequent.

The Carter St Precinct in Lidcombe is a new high-density residential area next to Olympic Park. Like Wentworth Point, it was originally industrial and, like many other industrial parts of Sydney, has been converted into housing.

I remade my fantasy rail network line diagrams for the T1, T9, and associated intercity/regional services in Inkscape. In a previous version of this post, I forgot to add the Creative Commons licence and a watermark for my website.

Sometimes, I think the Campbelltown Council does a pretty alright job at planning.

Then, there are other times when I notice that they’ve placed the new town centre for Menangle Park far away from the station 🙃

The new Mariyung trains are pretty nice. They feature surprisingly comfortable seats, internal displays, weirdly low bitrate audio announcements, vertical bike racks, and luggage storage. They're a big upgrade from the older V set trains.

Also, someone should probably clean the light rail sign at Central Grand Concourse.

I love Darling Square. It's a really cool high-density residential area centred around one of the best libraries I have ever seen where you can LOAN OLD CONSOLES, FRICKING SWEET.

Two days ago, I drew my fantasy Sydney rail network proposals as line diagrams! I am currently waiting for my university year to be over to start making a cohesive map in Inkscape.

These proposals are based on the Future Transport Strategy, council structure plans, and my previous fantasy map.

This might be my favourite journal article ever.

'Car Harm: A global review of automobility's harm to people and the environment' by Miner et al. is a peer-reviewed, open access (CC BY 4.0) article that reviews several other articles to provide reasons for why car dependency sucks.

The Western Sydney Local Health District and City of Parramatta recently released a wonderful guide about how to better plan for children in high density developments in NSW. The guide talks about ideal building scales, apartment layouts, and street layouts for encouraging active transport.

The platforms at Bankstown Station have been shortened to make way for a new walkway connecting North Tce and South Tce.
