It's time for my tradition of reading The Legend of Sleepy Hollow just before Halloween. I love Irving's description of the flora and fauna of the #hudsonvalley, and, of course, of Ichabod Crane, too. He captures the bounty and foreboding of autumn perfectly. #VisitHudsonValley #WashingtonIrving

Artist Frank Benson was born on March 24, 1862, in #SalemMass. He mastered many art forms including plein-air impressionism and portraiture. This portrait of his sister was completed in his studio on Chestnut Street in 1885 (photo by Stella van Mever wikiart.org).

On the Boardwalk at #VirginiaBeach, the Norwegian Lady looks out over the Atlantic. She commemorates an 1891 wreck just offshore. Buried in nearby Norfolk is the real Norwegian Lady drowned in that wreck. You can read their stories here: www.jamesflee.com/blog/virgini...

Anne Spencer was an African American poet associated with the Harlem Renaissance. Her home in #LynchburgVA was a refuge for Black artists, poets, and civil rights leaders passing through the South in the 1930s and 1940s. You can visit her home and garden today.

Anne Spencer was an African American teacher, gardener, and poet linked to the Harlem Renaissance. Her home in #LynchburgVA was a refuge and pilgrimage site for Black writers, poets, and leaders in the 1920s and 1930s. Today, you can visit her home and garden in Lynchburg.

The 6888th, the all black women's battalion, is depicted in the movie "Six Triple Eight." One of its members, Helen Henderson (right), was from Princess Anne County (Virginia Beach), VA.

The oldest house in Washington #DC was built in 1754 in Danvers, #Massachusetts! It was deconstructed board by board and nail by nail in the 1930s, loaded onto boxcars, and rebuilt on Kalorama Road. It once was British General Gage's summer house when he was governor of Massachusetts Colony.

Netflix drops "The Six Triple Eight," today, a movie about the 6888th Postal Battalion, the only all-Black, all-women battalion in US history.

#OTD 1775, British forces led by Lord Dunmore, Royal Governor of Virginia, were defeated by rebel militia at the Battle of Great Bridge in today's #ChesapeakeVA. British forces would evacuate the colony the following year.

These are Joe Froggers. Rum-molasses cookies unique to Marblehead, Mass. Local lore says that fishermen used to take them out on trips because they kept well and were filling. I made this tasty batch, by the way.
