Some fun twists and turns in this one.

Okay, fair, it was somewhat more generic than the pepe version, but surely you realize the slav squat is also just a different meme almost exclusive to the alt-right? I don't think any of this is definitive, but basic cultural awareness suggests one interpretation pretty strongly

I'm surprised the Sounders started going by "Black Face Seattle" but I'm still excited for the game

This is the key insight that pushed me away from actively advocating for atheism a decade ago. Even if I still can't fathom the belief system, it just gets replaced with more incomprehensible shit.

For at least a year, I've had the idea of building a function to reproject coordinates near the coast into an along-shore/inland reference frame, but couldn't quite think of how to do it until last weekend.

Here's an example of the Pekel mask reprojected using the tool. Pretty fun geometry problem.

Ah yes, two games of similar caliber and importance

(Spoiler warning) This paragraph in particular fucking nailed it. I've wanted the MCU to do this for years and never thought we'd see the day.

Incredibly disappointed that TripCase—the app I've been using to organize all my travel plans for like 8 years—is shutting down with very little notice. Another great, simple, user-friendly app that wasn't full of ads, gone.

Finally, the most interesting part. If you correct for the biased ICSF, what was the expected result if teams of equal standing played each other? If #1 plays #1 or #6 plays #6, how balanced was the outcome?

(Score imbalance = difference in scores divided by total points scored)
January 23, 2025 at 10:34 PM
Here, the "standings favorability" is a measure of how skewed the matchups were, on average, based on the (normalized) in-conference standings of each team.

On average, when ACC teams beat the SEC (top right), they were 33% higher in their conf. standings than their opponent!
January 23, 2025 at 10:34 PM
Next, average points scored and allowed by each conference in games against another P4. Rows are points scored, columns are points allowed.

As expected: B10 had the best defenses, SEC the best offenses, B12 the worst defenses, ACC the worst offenses (except against B12).

First, the overall record. I got inspired by @tomfornelli.bsky.social's running tally of P4 conference records against each other early this season. Here are the final records, including bowl games, for each conference pairing.

Rows are wins, columns are losses. Colors are % of matchups.
January 23, 2025 at 10:34 PM
How did the P4 conferences stack up this year?

There have been a lot of discussions about the performance of each conference in OOC games, both early in the season and in the postseason, but I haven't seen anything holistic.

Here's the catch-all image, but I'll break it down

Seems like Strava has decreased their sampling interval, the interpolation on my bike rides is much less accurate lately. I don't mind much, but looks pretty silly on short rides.

Managed to finish 69 books this year, almost double what I got through last year. Starting a legitimate reading hobby as an adult is great b/c there's so much good shit out there I haven't gotten to read yet.

Shout out to @birchlse.bsky.social for my favorite nonfiction book this year!

Hey Austin folks, my wife's ebike got stolen this weekend. We've already reported it on Bike Index, but if you happen to see it around, please lmk! It's a pretty uncommon model, so any sighting would be noteworthy.

It was, in fact, pretty big. Here's a shot from our hike through the Santa Elena canyon that the Rio Grande has been carving for like 2 million years. Pour one out for my wife for having to listen to me talk about Precambrian rock 30 times today.
