I do suspect the current very heavy emphasis on phonics might have had an impact on reading fluency because fluency requires us to feel rather than sound out a text, to search for meaning and to subconsciously predict where it's going.

For schools & colleges to thrive, every educator must feel valued, whatever their age, gender or background.

It’s about flexible working, supporting parents & carers, welcoming career changers, and opportunities for all.

Let’s celebrate those making this happen! 💛

Reading - the passport to life.
Y8 tests diagnose too late. If we want confident learners, we must invest early: EYFS & primary.
Teaching transforms. Every child should leave primary school a reader. Anything less locks doors before futures begin.

Very much this. Bear in mind that independent schools cite ‘dyslexia’ and ‘special needs’ as justification for 25% of their students having exam access arrangements. Even the teachers know it’s gamed.

Teaching is so much more than; Do A, Do B = Get C. Yet we’ve let people simplify to the point of abstraction. What the science of teaching has taught me is that a big chunk of it is about the skill and craft of the individual and it sits absolutely on a bedrock of relationships.

Great school leaders don’t lead alone—they listen. School improvement isn’t a solo mission; it’s a team sport built on trust, collaboration, and open dialogue. Lead with empathy. Learn with humility. Win together.
