Here’s the thing, emerging scientists aren’t going to flee to do science elsewhere…they just won’t do the science.

We will lose at least one, if not two generations of knowledge if we don’t get this shit sorted out immediately.
My teen, who had dreamt of being an astrophysicist, just told me he wants to go to law school because, “Science isn’t going to be a priority in the US in the future…I don’t want a job where I’ll be constantly worried my funding will be taken away.”

Gutting. How many future scientists have we lost?

I always seal my kids discarded kinder egg capsules really tightly before I throw them out, as I assume future alien scientists will test the contents to determine what the composition of our atmosphere was like.

You need to break this habit of checking your feed the moment you open your eyes in the morning. Nothing good comes of starting your day with high anxiety. Nothing good happened overnight. A broken world won’t mend because you read how it’s broken; it’ll just break you. This has been a note to self.

Aside from the corrosive nature of emails assigning major tasks on non-working days, and then automated messages chasing them up, can we just stop the RUSH to publish.
A bit longer spent all-round on writing, checking, reviewing, reading, proofing and thinking would make science a MUCH better place.

In the Rarest of Lab Events category…

We finally got to the center of a Parafilm roll!

In my 35 y in the lab I’ve never seen a roll completely empty

I hope it’s not a sign…

🧵 1/2 The fishing Wren - who knew? I'm playing in slomo so it's easier to see what's going on.
In fact the Wren is catching amphipods (happy to be corrected on species).
This shows the value of a weedy pond & providing access to it by placing branches over the surface.

Wren at the pond - it's unusual to see a Wren not find something to eat when they visit the pond. They come from dawn until dusk searching for invertebrates amongst the leaf litter.
Also a Dunnock & the ever thirsty Greenfinch - there's obviously not much moisture content in their seedy diet.

If someone says they don't drink:
-the reason is none of your business
-hosts should have several non-alcoholic beverage options, not just one
-the holidays can be a tough period for non-drinkers
-many jokes about not drinking are bad
-people might just be tired

I think one of the heartbreaking lessons I've learned, as a kid born in 1980, is that the pendulum of progress doesn't always swing up.

That's what we were promised as kids. On climate, equality and more. The fight was meant to be won.

It wasn't. And we weren't prepared for that.
