I keep thinking of the episode of the "Batman" TV series from the '60s, where the Penguin runs for Mayor. He's so obviously evil, and yet many citizens of Gotham City fall for his "tough on crime" rhetoric. The irony being, of course, the fact that he, himself, is a criminal.
