Pinned thread for my attempts at "EnergySky protection class" - I'll be going through various protection topics and relay types as I think of them, for anyone who's interested in knowing about one of the grid's lesser-discussed features. Hope it helps!
Hard, in that case, to tell apart from "I made my account when I was 12 and changing it is hard"
Yeah and frankly even everything else aside it would be bonkers to say that up to and including early college
Yeah no, I'm sorry, being good at math alone won't even make you a good engineer, this is terrible advice
I just think it's worth people knowing that, much as I like to indulge in paranoia myself, a strong storm is not all that's required to cause problems
I will note, those conditions CAN exist, the lines between Hudson Bay in Canada and their loads in the south are generally the worst case. Handful of lines in the US have had past issues, none where I work, most utilities put in monitors to alarm as needed just in case though
Suffice that this protection engineer sleeps fine during solar storms
I'll be watching the protection systems but having done a bunch of work on this some years ago the requirements for GMD to cause real issues on the grid are *very* specific, you need long lines going in the right direction across the right geological strata...
This whole thread is good but, this is the big thing to know
So the point here is

Your customer service is shit, your products are shit, your banking is shit, TV is shit, well, everything is shit because as long as the share price increases, the company doesn't actually gives a fuck if the product or service is shit

Because they're making money

they are able to peel back the ACA because its a shitty half measure but if we had gotten real universal healthcare instead no one would dare touch it because literally everybody on all sides would flip out. one more reason why Democratic incrementalism and "pragmatism" is fucking stupid !!!!!
I'm sorry but as an engineer I have used nothing but shortcut rules for over a decade and I don't plan on changing that
just a hollow man with mostly bad ideas who accidentally convinced the world he was smart, then fucked up the grift and has been desperately chasing that high
So the entire problem is that no one believes the Dem Senate leadership is actually in the fight on the side we want. You can't have unity with someone who is sabotaging you in the open
The sooner we get past internal recriminations and back to fighting united, the better off we all are — the likelier our victory next November.

A quick thread about why the image below and its implications terrify me.

My father, for many reasons, was a saint of a man. As he grew older, into his mid 80s, he developed issues separating dreams from reality, especially when waking up from naps.
This guy has the codes to nuclear weapons.

Yeah, this guy 👇
I was so baffled by his death as a kid, now looking back it's hilarious and an *almost* MGS2-style audience-bait
Solid action movie, lots of really solid performances and good characters. They did the premise justice. Just a fun watch. Maybe my second favorite Bill Paxton character too

you know, I'm told I have an anxiety disorder, that I'm too pessimistic, but I keep being fucking right

[stops fighting] “We will keep fighting.”

Uhh no fuckface, you JUST STOPPED.
There is maybe one politician I trust less on these matters than Chuck
Senate Democrats are meeting behind closed doors to discuss the emerging deal. “Stay tuned,” Schumer tells us with a grin.
This is the December you fight your dad
Unfortunately electrical work after the drywall is on fuckin sucks, from experience

hey guys isn't it weird how they're all saying this at the same time? ignore the fact that this is now happening with Tyler Cowen, an economist who sits at the center of a sprawling system of think tanks and policy "influencers" who have been laundered into DC with both Koch and SV VC money
Almost impossible to overstate how damaging it is to successfully excise from your life everyone capable of telling you "no"
this is happening across the board. it's why products suck. it's why musk and bezos and all of them are insane. it's why zuckerberg blew a fortune on miis that went nowhere. no one is around to say you're an idiot and shut your mouth before someone else hears you
You know actually, I make a tamale pie with a cornbread topper, I wonder if you could make like a fritos cornbread biscuit topper
