I scared the deer in the creek below. You could hear the splash of fleeing hooves breaking through shallow ice and the crash of antlers against dormant branches. 🌱
Winter sunset out my back door. Upper 1/3 background is wide open sky, fading from chambray to stonewashed denim blue cloud cover bearing faint steaks of orange which quickly melt into a hot lava-colored sunset. The vibrant orange middle 1/3 is broken by silhouettes of black pine trees and ghostly Aspen skeletons on the horizon of the foothills above the valley where we live. Bottom 1/3 foreground is washed out winter grass framing snow-dappled underbrush and a dense thicket of green-gray Russian olive trees.

🌱 🧅 🍄‍🟫 First little onion harvest! It’s supposed to freeze tomorrow night so it’s time to start covering plants. These were grown in first season hugelkultur beds, so they were probably a little nitrogen deficient… but growing alongside them are various fungi— a good sign decomposition has started!
Nine small to medium-sized sweet onions hung upside down on drying racks. Skins are still wet and brown. Nine little ink cap mushrooms growing alongside drip system hose. A cluster of about a dozen reddish-brown fungal blooms roughly the size of a pencil eraser. Scattered around are new chamomile seedlings I scattered this summer. They’ll grow as a nitrogen-fixing cover crop until winter and more will sprout in early spring. I’ll cut them off at the base before planting next season, save any blossoms for tea and turn stems and leaves into compost tea. About a dozen new chamomile sprouts and seedlings in soil surrounding a white fungal bloom again the size of a pencil eraser. Looks like a tiny tea cup filled with soil. Maybe a lone bird’s nest fungus? They’re usually clustered though.

Everything round here is still brown, but I’m stoked these perennials survived a late/hot summer transplant and fall planting at the new house.

The too-early-sprouting hardneck garlic I catastrophized over all winter made it too, even though it looked crystallized last week. 🌱
Pulled back the leaf mulch today to find the cutting taken from my grandma’s Rhubarb plant several years ago just keeps giving! 👵🏻💕 (unknown variety) Pink and red sprouts Sorbet Peony poking out from dried leaf mulch. The plant just is 4 years old, but already a beast! So excited it made the trip. This is Keene’s Garlic, organic hardneck Music variety. It sprouted after an October freeze so i buried it in leaf mulch. Temps were down to 7°F last weekend and when I pulled the covers off the sprouts were covered in crystals so i was almost certain it was lost. Happy to be wrong!

Love when the snow sticks to zillions of tiny branches and transforms the scenery. This is a color photo, so you can probably imagine how bleak the late winter landscape is here otherwise.
