This is my smallpox vaccine scar. I was among the last American generations to receive one. You know why? Because vaccines work, and smallpox was eradicated globally by 1980. Tampering with the tax code is one thing. Tampering with Americans' health is another thing entirely. This is not a drill.

If a president "holds all the levers" and "has all the cards," then checks and balances are gone and we live in an authoritarian state. If the Congress and the courts no longer matter, then our democracy is lost. It took 163 days.

Peace Corps Week! When we are being encouraged to retreat from the rest of the world and focus solely on our own needs, I say run headlong into learning from others and striving to understand different perspectives. The Peace Corps and similar programs are *not"* a handout to third world countries.
