Gamer, Father, old school nerd. Lover of Boardgames, Tokusatsu and goofy stuff. He/Him.
In both episodes watched (28 and 29), the classic question: 'WHY ARE YOU EVEN GETTING OFF THE TRAIN HERE?'. First is the Planet of Mirages, a hot desert planet. Maetel switches to a bathing suit, but Tetsuro doesn't strip down. The second's a hot jungle, but she stays wearing her normal outfit. 2/7

As I continue my slow roll through #GalaxyExpress999, I find that the show remains both utterly ridiculous and incredibly engaging. In hindsight, the concept of the show is kind of outrageous: there's no toy sales here, no easy answers; only a small recurring cast and big ideas. 1/

A reminder that the Flash Gordon daily comic is REALLY FRIGGING GOOD and you should read it. @danschkade.bsky.social has made me care about Flash and his world for the first time since the 1980 Michael Hodges film. But that was high camp and this is High Adventure.

Keep in mind they've been here for an hour? The natives realize Maetel tricked them as she's trying to sneak him out, she gets beaten up and then tied up for volcano sacrifice super-quick. Tetsuro, who escaped, decides to save her. 25/30

Episode 21 introduces Pirate Queen Emerldas (recently in Captain Harlock) into GE999. Maetel's rivalry in the past with here is referenced without any explanation. It's fun, but kind of a shaggy dog story. 15/30

Episode 20 introduces a new passenger on the train, which guarantees his death by the end of the story, because he's a nice person. His body is wood and he sacrifices himself after meeting Tetsuro, who reawakened his love of painting. 13/30

He's rescued by a professional gunslinger, who then starts training Tetsuro (apparently unaware he's not a cyborg). Maetel is forced to gun him down in a duel (showing she has faster reflexes and is a gunslinger herself) to free Tetsuro. They return to the train. 9/30

The world's on fire and I JUST CAN'T, so let's talk more about #GalaxyExpress999. Our watchthrough continues, but slowed down because my daughter wants to watch with us, which is the best reason. 1/30

The fact that Peter Parker used to dress like this and referenced that hot young actress Mia Farrow lives rent-free in my head.

I'm back on my #GalaxyExpress999 watchthrough. The show continues to deliver, even if some themes are repeating enough to become series tropes. I commented to my daughter, who has taken to watching with us, "I DO NOT LIKE HOW NEARLY FIFTY YEAR OLD SHOW RELEVANT THIS SHOW IS TO CURRENT EVENTS." 1/15

Dang it, forgot Alt text.

#GalaxyExpeess999 continues to bring the laugh riot that is the future of the 2200s. Matsumoto is weak on science, expects you to fill in a lot of gaps but has a lot of imagination. GE999 has Much more tragic feel than Harlock. This seemed like it was going to be an adventure tale, but 1/3

We started watching our way through #GalaxyExpress999 I’d forgotten how hard it goes. Also its themes of economic inequality, bodily autonomy and privilege fell A LOT more relevant today than I expected for a 46 years old show.

#10 Dan Spiegle - an artist in the business for decades, Spiegle is almost unknown, but he's versatile and stretched from Gold Key adaptions to Disney work to Power Pack and Crossfire and DNAgents. A journeyman who never hit big name recognition, he was everywhere for decades, especially Blackhawk.

#9 - Babs Tarr - a freelance illustrator who DC tapped to reboot Batgirl (of Burnside), Tarr's electric artwork ends up more on covers and really deserves to be better known. That she was the first long-term female artists on a batcomic says a lot about the industry #comics #underappreciatedartists

#8 - Kyle Baker - you'd think a multiple Eisner and Harvey awards would be a household name, but you'd be wrong. Baker is viewed as a cartoonist, which he is...but compare his work on Truth and Plastic Man and you can see an amazing range #comics #underappreciatedartists

Continuing my #comics #underapprecitedartists list
#7 - Nick Cardy - Some artists put in solid work and went largely ignored, even as their work wasn't. Cardy delivered amazing work for Aquaman and the Teen Titans but his work covered a lot of titles and styles.

#6 - Stuart Imonnen - How he isn't a household name is confusing to me; not unknown, but his stellar work is so polished and despite his years of work, he seems like a relative unknown to many people. He deserves to be better known.
August 25, 2025 at 8:55 PM
#5 - Jose Garcia-Lopez - When Curt Swan left Superman, Garcia-Lopez took the mantle - but not merely copy Swan's style, he delivered his own thing that many people instantly recognize, but don't realize who did it.
August 25, 2025 at 8:55 PM
#4 Sal Buscema - Buscema was never flashy so he was easy to dismiss. But he was a solid draftsman that was always delivered. He delivered solid storytelling reliably, time after time.
August 25, 2025 at 8:55 PM
#3 Ross Andru - Spider-man has had many good artists over his lifetime, so it's no surprise that people pass over Andru on their way between the various Romitas and others. That's their mistake, IMHO. Few artists truly captured Spidey's athleticism better, Andru always has Spidey ready to leap.

#2: Jim Aparo. When I think of Batman, THIS is who I think of. Action packed and yet not somehow realistic in a way that makes it all believable. Aparo's Batman was not the 'bat god', but a dedicated and relatable human being with a human being's limits.

The world is on fire right now. Again. Again Again. So I need to think of something positive. So here it is: Underappreciated comics artists.

#1 Dave Cockrum. Designed some of the most iconic costumes in modern comics. Dynamic and action-packed, the modern X-Men are built on his foundation.

I thought to myself, is it really this bad? And discovered that when I tried, not only did it not do what I asked (note the image it gave me dropped the names of the last 4), but its easy to miss ol' Andrew Joekson there and that these are approximations of art of those presidents, not actual images
