Note that Chicago redrew its wards in 1911, so it's impossible to directly compare the 1910 census data and 1912 election results.

Here's how the map looks with Taft and Roosevelt combined. The city goes Republican by a 25 point margin and Wilson only wins one ward.

Like most major cities, President Taft did very poorly in Chicago, only breaking 20% in a few scattered wards. Eugene Debs amassed a substantial vote among the Germans on the North Side.

Theodore Roosevelt won Chicago by 6% over Woodrow Wilson in 1912. The poor immigrants on the West Side and along the Chicago River mostly backed Wilson while Roosevelt won the wealthier, more native-born suburban wards. Taft barely won the 17th ward due to a heavily split vote.

Despite his rural landslide, Carter only won WI by 1.6%. This election is a classic case of Land Doesn't Vote, most of Carter's actual votes came from Madison, Milwaukee, and a few smaller industrial cities, which were counterbalanced by Ford's suburban and small-town margins.

In honor of Jimmy Carter's 99th birthday this week I've mapped his 1976 victory in Wisconsin. He absolutely obliterated Gerald Ford in rural areas, especially Polish and Scandinavian areas in the north and west of the state.

The presidential election of 1964 brought a seismic realignment to New England. Barry Goldwater's southern and western-oriented ultraconservative platform destroyed a century of Yankee Republicanism, with LBJ flipping hundreds of formerly rock-ribbed Republican towns.

In addition to Poles, he seems to have done OK with Milwaukee's Irish community in central Milwaukee. The wards in green had an Irish-born population of at least 0.5%.

James Cox performed abysmally. Most Germans despised him for banning German-language instruction in schools as OH governor, and he won less than 10% in most of the north side. He won only the heavily Polish 14th ward, one of only 10 Wisconsin precincts to vote for him.

Despite being imprisoned for opposing WWI under the Sedition Act, Eugene Debs won 30% of Milwaukee County's vote, the best ever showing for a socialist presidential candidate in a WI county, He performed best in Milwaukee's German and Polish neighborhoods, carrying 4 wards.
