Austerity
Brexit
Covid

Add D for defence

UK hasn’t recovered from the financial crash given our dependence on that sector

Brexit has only made it worse & diminished London’s role

Saying you would not raise taxes in Labour’s manifesto was total madness

Fascinating interview with Ken Clarke in which he reflects on the profound changes in politics over his lifetime

Typified by Badenoch’s response to the budget, a mix of arrogance and aggression

Clearly suited to today’s right wing, they are openly celebrating it

What has become of our politics?

“But the report does not suggest the overall death toll for the pandemic – 227,000 in the UK by the time it was declared over in 2023 – would have been reduced by an earlier lockdown.”

Excellent comment from the BBC

Wonder how many will pick up on this?
November 20, 2025 at 7:05 PM
It is awful for the loved ones, but would those same people have succumbed to the virus 6 months later?

Surely our death rate reflects the underlying poor health and age profile of the population?

It was never clear at the time what the R rate was to enter or exit from lockdown?

Framing the pandemic is non-trivial

The UK never attempted to eliminate COVID, only mitigate it to avoid NHS collapse

It was inevitable that most people would catch the virus

But time did buy better hospital treatments

So would an earlier 1st lockdown have really saved 23,000 lives?

“Short-sighted decisions – such as the Cameron coalition allowing Nick Clegg’s opposition to new nuclear to tank any potential for new sites”

Says Ed Miliband

Note his omission of any reference to the disaster at Fukushima in 2011 which ended German investment in new nuclear in the U.K.

Be thankful for the Guardian

You have to wonder if the BBC would investigate this now?

Note the reference “in legal letters to the Guardian”

Perhaps we need a TV drama to highlight Farage’s early character

If you are prepared to risk your life crossing the Channel, the idea that Rwanda or Starmer’s 1 in 1 out scheme, which represents a 1% change of being sent back, would deter you from coming here is fanciful

Beverly Turner of GBNews interviewed (fawned all over) Trump in the Oval Office

Strange how money and power has corrupted her preview view of Trump

But it’s far too soon to answer that, surely?

Prescott makes no reference to the fact that republicans refused to support this committee, they tried to suppress it

The two republican members who did take part, Liz Cheney & Adam Kinzinger, both supported its recommendations

And Prescott accuses the BBC of bias?

Prescott's 18 page letter to the BBC Board

"Turness tried to justify the doctored video and mangled timeline of the day by citing the US Congressional Committee on Trump’s role in the January 6th riots"

"Yet this was a Democrat-packed Committee, not an objective source of truth"

The key question is whether the Panorama edit made a material difference to the overall impression of the programme?

There were no complaints when it was broadcast, presumably because Trump had already been found guilty by a congressional committee

It’s a shame we can’t rewatch the episode
November 11, 2025 at 9:20 AM
“On Jan 6th itself Trump over roughly 70 minutes used the words “fight”, “fighting” or “fighters” more than 20 times.”

@lewisgoodall.com has listened to Trump’s speech for you
November 10, 2025 at 9:11 AM
Did BBC Panorama edit Trump’s speech?

To answer that, you watch both the edit & the original

Nandy said she’d watched Panorama but not the original

So, she couldn’t answer the question

What a surprise

Standard media deflection, say you haven’t seen the article etc

She got away with it 🙄

Gates’s essay runs 5,000 words without a single mention of Donald Trump.

Still, it’s hard not to think Trump’s presidency left its mark on Gates’s thinking.

If Democrats take power in 2029, his stance might change.

Two Chinese stories

A dropped legal case & a big data breach

Related?

Happened under the Tories

But what leaked?

Did it impact our allies?

Did we tell them?

Will Badenoch further undermine the last 14 years of Tory rule?

The only winner here is Farage

And China

What was Starmer supposed to say at PMQs?

“We’ve had more revealing emails and have raised questions with him?”

Fine to criticise Starmer for the idiotic appointment in the first place but for following due process?

What is 2 days in 20 year old emails?

Our media is a joke

Yet during his vetting process, No10 claimed he didn’t have access to his old email account

Had Bloomberg approached him with the emails or did he suddenly remember them?

Either way, he knew their contents
