“It mostly is trickery,” Alec said, intent on spoiling her sense of wonder. “They’re still using magic for the performance,” she said. “Even if it was extracted magic to enhance whatever weak natural ability they have. So that man might not have turned into a dog, but he was able to project the image for the audience. You’re a seer. You have to understand the method.” He waved away a few of the enchanted sparkles still dancing in the air. “Why are you such an expert on the workings of magic for someone with none of your own?” Her throat tightened at the disdainful question. In a society where magic was status, she was at the bottom. Her tenuous ties to nobility and talent at deciphering the ancient writings were the reasons she had managed to rise at all. If it wasn’t for her mentor’s faith in her discovery and the unwillingness of anyone else to travel to a neutral state, she wouldn’t be on the mission.

The hours crawled by when he was gone. Hana only ended up with a throbbing headache from staring at the crystal. Her surroundings weren’t helping her mood. There was a musty odor from the stacks of books, and she suspected the professor had little regard for the cleanliness of his home. His clothes were crammed in an empty crate and empty alcohol bottles collected dust in the corner. At least Keri and Mila could distract themselves with all of his books. The two poured over the volumes, leaning so close their heads brushed against each other. Hana had no idea what was so fascinating in the text.

Kalyn blinked. Matthias acted like he would prefer she boarded a train and never returned. Hana was the one who brought back the old Matthias. “I doubt he thought much about me. That’s all in the past.” “Maybe fate brought you back together!” Hana smiled with an innocent sincerity. “Don’t give up on him, even if he’s grumpy, a little frightening, and doesn’t have much charm. Are you and Evan very close?” It was almost impressive how fast Hana could switch subjects. “Not at all. His father had an interest in the endeavor. That puts us in the same circles. We haven’t much in common. He’s like a pest of a brother.” Hana nodded. “I see.” Kalyn almost wanted to warn her not to go down that path with Evan. He left a trail of broken hearts as he whistled away.

“Are you all right?” Keri asked, mistaking her hesitation for nerves. “You can wait outside.” Hana shook her head so wildly that her hat almost fell off. “No! I’m just… you can feel the magic.” Keri’s forehead crinkled as she peered around the vast hall. “I didn’t expect such a display. No wonder few visit. It wouldn’t surprise me if I’m the only one applying for the scribe position.” Hana understood why people feared magic, but couldn’t share the concern. Her biggest regret was being born past the time of magic. A strange sadness washed over her as she passed mosaics of famous ancient wizards who now only existed in stories. It felt like she had stepped into a mythical world, something more majestic than sweltering factories, rumbling trains, and smoggy cities. A place where magic was once beautiful and not just demonic threats that lurked outside cities.
